As an Associate member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers, entering into the annual Australian Professional Photography Awards or APPA as they are fondly known, is a big deal and certainly an opportunity that can’t be missed for award winning photographer Nicholas Fiennes.
Professional photographers from all over Australia and the world compete in a variety of categories.
It takes weeks of preparation and deliberation on choosing the right images to enter.
Award Winning Portrait Photos
This year, Nick scored a duo with his portrait photos!
- Silver in the Portrait category for his image of a ballet dancer
- Silver in the Portrait category for his portrait of a little girl
“I’m delighted that the judges saw award winning qualities in each of my images, enough to honour them with silver awards.
“The images I entered were from actual client photo shoots commissioned this year. It’s acknowledgement for the hard work I do to make sure that I create award winning images for each of my clients that come into the studio” said Nick.
About the AIPP APPA Awards
The APPAs are the largest awards for professional print photography in Australia and one of the largest in the world. It is the only professional photography awards in the country that require physical prints to be submitted for judging.
There are five judging rooms running simultaneously, with professional prints across 16 genres presented one-by-one in front of a panel of professional judges where they take the time to critique and mark each individual print.
The judges are given the following assessment criteria to think about when judging images:
- Communication and narrative skills
- Visual and emotional impact
- Composition and image design
- Timing, anticipation
- Processing, post-production and presentation
The APPAs have been running annually for the past 40 years. You can view us and many other winners here.
